02 Jan 5 Cool Things To Do In Himachal Pradesh, India

Himachal Pradesh, the northern-most state of India, offers much for those who are looking for epic adventures, rich Indian-Tibetan culture and breath-taking scenery.

Himachal is in the western part of the Himalayas, hence it is a mountainous state and one of the richest reservoirs of biological diversity in the world. I personally enjoyed my time in Himachal Pradesh because it’s really beautiful, culturally-rich and unique, so I am going to recommend some cool and best things to do in Himachal Pradesh for you!

(1) Explore Mcleodganj, Dharamshala

Take a night bus from New Delhi and you will reach Mcleodganj effortlessly. Mcleodganj is a suburb of Dharamshala, also known as Little Lhasa due to its large population of Tibetans. It’s amazing to see the mixture of Indian and Tibetan culture here in this little mountain. This place is known for the Buddhist monasteries, Tibetan museum and  Bhagsu falls along with many other smaller sights to see and activities to do.

(2) Go for a short hike along the Triund Trek

If you are seeking for some little adventure far off the hustle and bustle of cities, try the Triund trek and I assure you that you will not regret it! It’s an easy trek, which you can complete (ascend and descend) in a day, but I highly suggest you camp over for a night because of the amazing scenery the Himalayan mountains! You don’t even have to bring your own tent, so just hike up and rent a tent from one of the few locals up there. Just imagine sleeping underneath the blanket of stars and the milky way, and wake up to the view of alpenglow!

(3) Pump up the adrenaline and paraglide in Bir, Billing

I’ve never thought of paragliding in India, so when I found out that the small Tibetan town – Bir, Billing offers a relatively safe tandem paragliding to flying in the biggest mountains of the world, I know I have to do this! There are no prerequisites or prior experience required for this adventure activity. Do make sure to check if your pilot holds an International tandem license. I really enjoyed the feeling of soaring high in the sky and experience a bird’s eye view of the mountains. It’s just so amazing! I went there during the post-monsoon season – October, and the weather is just cooling and perfect! So, just put on comfortable clothes, sports shoe and up you go!

(4) Explore the capital of Himachal Pradesh – Shimla

A visit to Himachal Pradesh is incomplete without visiting its capital – Shimla. This place is one of India’s most popular hill resorts due to the appeal of its previous life as the summer capital of British India. The weather is chilly in October, hence walking around during the day and night is pleasant. There are so many things to do in Shimla, such as explore the main shopping street of Shimla – The Mall, stroll along The Ridge and Jakhoo, or visit the famous sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman – Sankat Mochan.

(5) Take the Shimla Toy Train – listed as a UNESCO site

Hop on the Shimla-Kalka Toy Train and enjoy the sweeping panoramic view of the mountains. The train runs on a 2 feet 6 inches wide railway connects Shimla and Kalka, takes you through lush green mountains with scenic views of Northen Indian remote locations with scenes span for miles atop more than 100 bridges built hundreds of years ago. Do not miss this amazing ride when you are in Shimla!

Traveller’s tips and recommendation:

  1. The weather in Himachal Pradesh can be chilly, so do pack some comfortable clothes and scarf or jacket for the night.
  2. Rides from one town to the other in Himachal Pradesh can very challenging, so do bring along your own medication if you are prone to motion sickness.
